The New Champions League Format Explained
From the 2024/25 season, UEFA scrapped the traditional group stage in favour of a single 36-team league phase. Every club plays eight matches — four at home and four away — against eight different opponents seeded by coefficient ranking. The top eight qualify directly for the Round of 16, teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff round, and the bottom twelve are eliminated.
This means significantly more fixtures than the old format. With 144 league phase matches spread across eight matchdays instead of 96 across six, there is more live Champions League football than ever before. On a single matchnight you can have up to nine simultaneous kickoffs.
